Magnificent hand embroidered and hand stitched cotton quilt called Kanthan or Katha. Made using one of the oldest styles of embroidery from the Bolpur-Shantiniketan area of West Bengal; the area that formed part of the early empires that controlled northern India. These remarkable quilts are made purely by the spontaneous folk expression and personal desire and emotion of the rural women. Each Kantha is unique and different from every other one just as is each human being who thinks up the colors and stitches and patterns differ. Made with organic natural dyes, one of the most unique aspects of the Kantha is the maker chooses the best design based on her complexion. Each intricate and functional hand-art Kantha takes a full-time artisan approximately 2 to 6 months to create. The remarkable and sometimes wide stitches are visible throughout the entire quilt front and back. Owning a Kantha is owning a part of a long history of the personal works of women and their emotions and desires of that exact time in their lives. They are soft with no artificial chemicals and they envelope you. They make fantastic throws and wall hangings as well.
