Vintage 1950s Marc Bellaire Mardi Gras Ceramic ashtray/ catchall/ platter. This vibrant ashtray /decorative platter is by the famed American artist/ceramicist, Marc Bellaire who was a former employee of Sascha Brastoff before launching his own studio. This is an example from his ‘Mardi Gras’ series of ashtrays, defined by its depiction of Harlequins posing. This is the largest example we have seen from this series and is in mint condition with no chips or crazing. Marc Bellaire’s signature is present on both the front and back. It has a nice texture that does not translate well in photographs, but the colorful glaze that makes up the Harlequins’ costumes almost looks like enamel. This piece has great dimension and depth due to the variety of ceramic techniques incorporated and the rich colors used. This vibrant and period-piece is manufactured by the California Art Pottery Company. Great as a catchall in the entrance and as a display accessory or for its original intention; an ashtray.
